Designing Tomorrow: Mission-Grounded Governance in Austin
The future of learning is not something we simply predict. It is something we have the distinct opportunity to design.
I was recently reminded of this truth during my time with the community at Austin Waldorf School in Austin, Texas, working alongside Head of School Dr. Michelle Purghart, the Board of Trustees, and the school’s dedicated leadership team.
There is a palpable energy in Austin right now. Across the country, educational leaders are grappling with rapid change, technological shifts, and evolving family expectations. But what makes Austin Waldorf stand out is their approach: they are engaging in bold, forward-thinking strategy while staying fiercely anchored in the core values that make Waldorf education so distinctive.
Balancing Enduring Values with Bold Vision
For mission-driven schools, strategic visioning is often a delicate balancing act. How do you honor traditional pedagogy while designing an educational experience that prepares students for an unpredictable future?
During our sessions, the Board and leadership team tackled this question directly by focusing on three crucial steps:
Honest Reflection: Taking a clear-eyed look at where the school stands today—its strengths, its cultural core, and its unique assets.
Courageous Exploration: Imagining what’s possible for tomorrow without self-imposed constraints or fear of change.
Intentional Navigation: Charting a clear, actionable roadmap that connects present operations with long-term strategic goals.
Purposeful Design in Action
When a school community unites around a shared vision, strategic planning ceases to be a mere administrative requirement. It becomes a creative, empowering process that energizes faculty, reassures families, and opens up new possibilities for students.
Austin Waldorf demonstrates that being a traditional, mission-driven school and being an innovative, forward-looking institution are not mutually exclusive—they are mutually reinforcing.
A sincere thank you to Dr. Michelle Purghart, the Board of Trustees, and the entire Austin Waldorf team for your warm hospitality, your deep trust, and your willingness to think boldly about what comes next.
