Veterans Day
Published: 11/13/2016
On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, hostilities ceased on the Western Front as Germany signed an armistice agreement with the Allies ending the Great War. It was believed that this was “the war to end all wars” and the date was commemorated as Armistice Day. On November 11 Americans pause to remember those who have served in the armed forces.
This year as we celebrate Veterans Day, I think about the friends we met this year during the Wounded Warrior Weekend and the amazing “Welcome” these heroes received on campus.
The inspiring words from Brian Anderson and the conversations with the veterans were powerful reminders of the importance of respect and remembrance. As we celebrate Veterans Day it is important to reflect on how we can build on this legacy of appreciation and leave it for our children.
I am proud to be part of a community that respects and honors the sacrifices made for our country and our freedom. As we remember with gratitude and compassion all those who have protected the principles of our country through military service with model for our children. In my opinion, the best ways we can teach our children to be grateful for the sacrifices of American veterans are through our words and actions. Talk about the heroes you know, volunteer with organizations that support veterans, introduce your child to a veteran, and always thank a veteran for their service.
Thank you, veterans, past and present, for what you have done for us all.
